Operation FALCON Results in 540 Area Arrests
Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally (FALCON) has been getting warrants resolved since 2005 and over the past month resulted in over 35,000 arrests nationally.
The annual operation unites local law enforcement and federal agencies in a common goal, arresting fugitives and serving warrants. Over half of the 540 North Carolina arrests were in Durham where officers from the Durham, Hillsborough, and Chapel Hill Police Departments pooled their personnel to manage such a large scale sweep.
The majority of the NC arrests were for drug offenses although this article from the News and Observer points out there were 2 men apprehended for their suspected roles in homicide cases.
Operation FALCON doesn’t only get fugitives off the streets; it also unites agencies and builds relationships. When local law enforcement personnel can work together across jurisdictions there is a sense of real commitment to a common goal.
Nationally, the program emphasizes the arrest of sex offenders, gang members and violent fugitives. By focusing on these higher profile warrants the agencies can work together to make serious progress in a short amount of time.
Because the criminal justice system is so overcrowded and spread so thin, often these warrants sit for extended periods while suspects are investigated or departments are forced to deal with more pressing matters. The month of June marked a nationwide move to get the backlogged warrants out and served.
It is pretty likely that the majority of these fugitives knew they had an active outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court. They were just biding their time, waiting to get caught. Now they are in the system waiting for their fates to be revealed.
Hiding from a warrant can be extremely stressful. If you have an active warrant for your arrest, it would probably be in the best interest of your case to talk with an attorney about what to do next. Taking responsibility for the warrant, even if you are innocent of the charges, could affect your case in a positive way.
