Durham County D.A. “Mistakes” Lead to Dismissals, Appeals


The position of the Durham County District Attorney is not one that’s new to the spotlight. After the Duke Lacrosse case involving former D.A. Mike Nifong, the office gained national notoriety. Fayetteville P.D. Pulls Tasers Temporarily


A 56 year old Fayetteville man was killed when police used a Taser to subdue him prior to arrest. As a result, Police Chief Tom Bergamine announced this week that all police officers were to turn in their Tasers. All of the weapons will be examined to ensure they are working properly. NC Appeals Court Overturns Drug Conviction


The North Carolina Court of Appeals overturned a drug conviction this week where it was determined the initial arrest and search were a violation of the defendant’s rights. Maurice Donnell White pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine in 2010 for the offense that took place in 2008. [read more...]

Major Crime Legislation Pending In NC House


North Carolina is poised to overhaul the probation system in a way that hasn’t been done thus far. One lawmaker calls it “the biggest piece of reform since 1994 restructured sentencing.” The bill could make some extremely progressive changes to how convicted offenders are sentenced and how they fare once released from prison. New Charlotte DA Seeks Out Repeat Offenders


He’s the first new District Attorney in Mecklenburg County in 36 years and Andrew Murray has a plan to “slow the revolving door” that was sending repeat criminals back on the street. According to the Charlotte Observer, the District Attorney’s office is set to send double the number of habitual offenders to prison this year than last year, about 500. [read more...]
